How can positive communication be built?
Disconnection between intent of the speaker and reception of the listener may cause miscommunication and misunderstanding, leaving both parties feeling frustrated and unheard. How can we bridge the gap? Consider these simple tips for positive communication:
- Listen & Give Mindful Responses – Listening carefully with an open mind will help you understand more clearly what the other person is trying to convey, allowing you to give a more mindful response. Asking well thought out questions shows concern for the other person, while avoiding misunderstandings.
- Be Mindful of Your Body Language – Nonverbal cues are often noticed before any words are said. Being mindful of posture and facial expressions will help convey your message in the way you desire.
- Offer Positive, Alternative Solutions – Use positive language, offering helpful solutions. Instead of saying, “This can’t get done without ABC..” say something like “If we can get ABC done, then….”
- Provide Active/Constructive Responses – Instead of saying “That sounds complicated, are you sure that’s going to work?”…..say something like, “That’s interesting. How do you perceive the outcome of that situation?” – Showing interest in the other persons point of view, without being too forceful, helps both parties think more clearly and arrive at various alternative solutions.
Communication is an art that may take time and practice. It is well worth the effort though, enabling stronger bonds to be built. Good communication creates a more peaceful environment both at home and in the workplace.
